Uber Schooling
The other day, I came home from work and (as is our custom over dinner) got a debrief from the kids of all the day's activities. It dawned on me that even though it was summer vacation, their schedules were packed -- soccer camp, art academy, museum visits, piano lessons, swimming lessons, library reading sessions...
Even though the public schools were on intersession, they were still getting schooling. When the new school year starts, they will continue many of these extra-curricular activities. On top of that, Teresa spends a lot of time volunteering at their elementary school -- planning class events, driving to field trips, reading in the library, teaching computer lab, organizing art projects, etc. After school, she'll work with them on their math, spelling and reading homework. She also teaches their Sunday School classes our our church. Given all this teaching activity, I would posit it's not exactly accurate to say our kids aren't getting home schooled. And it's also somewhat misleading to say they are simply relying on a public school education. I think this situation applies to most other families at our church.
Home Schooling? Public Schooling? I told Teresa a new term is needed to describe a third category -- how about "Uber Schooling"? She just rolled her eyes and went back to strapping the kids into the van on the way to the next activity.
